Household Hazardous Waste

Getting Rid of Wastes

Chemicals such as leftover or unused fuels, paints, pesticides, fertilizers, car batteries, antifreeze, motor oil, spot removers, and oven cleaners stored under your kitchen sink, in the basement or garage can cause house fires and accidental poisonings.

If these hazardous chemicals are stored or disposed of improperly, they may seep into our environment and poison our land, air and water.

It is illegal and dangerous to dump household hazardous waste down sewers or storm drains, or in the garbage can. Water quality is an important issue for Salt Lake County residents because of our limited water supply and large population.

We need to do everything possible to protect and preserve the quality of our ground and surface waters.

Products are collected and shipped for proper disposal at the locations above. Many items like latex paint, used oils and fuels are sorted and sent to recycling and reuse operations.

Recycled products end up back on store shelves as paint primer, caulking, and anti-freeze. Products that can’t be recycled or reused are safely stored or destroyed.

Many of the products that are brought in for disposal are still useful - sometimes still brand new. These items are available free to the public at the Reuse Centers. Visit the centers to pick up free paint, pesticides, fertilizers and much more.
