Smoke-Free Homes

Join the 89.1% of Salt Lake County residents that have a rule against smoking in their homes and cars by taking a smoke-free home pledge.

According to the Utah Department of Health "the estimated rate of children exposed to secondhand smoke in their homes decreased from 7.6% in 2001 to 2.1% in 2006/2007."

This is a great accomplishment and we want to keep moving in the right direction.

What is a smoke-free home pledge?

  • By taking a smoke-free home pledge, you are pledging not to smoke in your home or car.
  • Not a smoker? You can still take the pledge and that means you will not allow any of your family, friends or guests to smoke when they are in your home or car.

Why is it important to take the pledge?

  • There are over 4,000 harmful chemicals in secondhand smoke, 50 of which are known to cause cancer.
  • Secondhand smoke has serious health effects on children. Secondhand smoke can cause or worsen asthma, causes respiratory illness and chronic ear infections and has also been linked to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
  • Opening windows in your home or car will not completely remove tobacco smoke from the air. There is no safe level of secondhand smoke exposure.
  • The only way to completely protect you and your family at home from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke is to make your home environment 100% smoke-free.
