Declare Your Independence
Free Yourself From Nicotine Addiction
Did you know that 20 minutes after quitting smoking your heart rate and blood pressure drop to normal and after 1 year your risk of heart disease is half that of a smoker's. This year make the commitment to change your life and improve your health.
Why quit now?
-
Improve your health: half of all smokers who continue to smoke will eventually die from smoking-related illness
-
Extend your life: the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that adult male smokers lose an average of 13.2 years of life and female smokers lose 14.5 years of life because of smoking
-
Protect the health of those around you: secondhand smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals (50 of which are known to cause cancer in humans)
-
Save time and money: calculate the number of cigarettes you smoke and how much they are costing you
Tips to help you prepare to quit
-
Pick the date and mark it on the calendar
-
Tell your family and friends about your quit date

-
Decide on a plan. Will you use nicotine replacement therapy or other medicines? Will you call the Utah Tobacco Quit Line (1-800-QUIT-NOW) or use Utah QuitNet? Visit the Salt Lake County Resource Directory for more tobacco cessation resources.
-
Get rid of all your cigarettes, matches, lighters and ashtrays in your home, car and at work
-
If you have tried to quit before, think back to your past quit attempts to see what worked and what didn’t. Use that to help you plan this quit attempt.
