Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is the most common serious virus of the liver which can lead to liver disease and cancer. As a result transmission occurs from an infected mother to a newborn in the birthing process.
If not treated with Hepatitis B Immunoglobulin (HBIG) vaccine at birth, an infected newborn has a 90% chance of chronic lifelong infection. Fortunately, HBV can be prevented with a very safe and effective vaccine.
The Salt Lake Valley Health Department (SLVHD) in collaboration with the Utah Department of Health works with mothers, doctors, and midwifes to keep babies free of Hepatitis B Infection.
The Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program pays for all Hepatitis B vaccination series and post serological testing for the newborn and family members.
