Environmental Health Sustainability Garden

Community Garden

Ground was broken for the creation of the Sustainability Garden at Salt Lake Valley Environmental Health (SLVEH) in April of 2010.  As part of a comprehensive effort to reduce utility usage at our Murray facility we aim to remove all turf on our grounds in favor of more drought tolerant and edible plants.  This will result in a more productive use of tax payer money, with less being spent on utilities.  The partnership between Parkside Elementary and SLVEH introduces children to the benefits of gardening and gives them a new perspective from where food originates.  In addition, the garden provides the children, their families, and Environmental Health employees with fresh produce, which for cost reasons, may normally be unobtainable.  Aside from the edible dividends produced by such a project, the value of strengthened relationships between staff members and new found partnerships is enormous.

Community GardenSalt Lake Valley Environmental Health aims to increase its role in the community in which it serves by creating a sustainability garden to bolster awareness, skills, partnerships, and pride in our community.  The sustainability garden will become a model for what is possible for community and office gardens in Salt Lake County.
